Rainy day

Aug. 29th, 2017 10:39 pm

Though it was just grey and cloudy when I went to work, I managed to bring my umbrella. So when it rained at lunchtime I was prepared. Work was pretty normal, nothing much of interest except that I pulled duplicates off the shelves of my section and now have a cart load of dups to re-home.

After work the FWiB called. His sister is safe. We had a good talk on my way to my meeting.

The meeting was good. Topics were courage, and detachment and boundaries. We had three people, which was a nice change from two.

Came home and that's about it.

Gratitude List:

1. Had my umbrella.

2. The FWiB.

3. My meetings and the people there.

4. Good dinner.

5. I'm not in Texas.

6. Bed soon.

The day was pretty quiet. I won't say it was good to be back, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I found out how it went there the day of the eclipse, there was an estimate of a thousand! Of course there weren't enough glasses for everyone, there were only about a hundred, give or take. So they had a demonstration of how to make pinhole viewers. All in all, though it would have been impressive to see, I'm glad I wasn't there.

I called Aunt Helen and asked if she had heard from the contractor about the cottage. She hadn't. I'm not sure what to do now.

After work the FWiB called and we had a nice long talk while I went through Flushing to go to the bank. No word from his sister.

Went and picked up my laundry, which I should have done yesterday.

Called The Kid but she didn't pick up.

And there was a shooting in a library in Clovis, New Mexico. Apparently a guy walked in and started shooting up the place. Two dead, four wounded. It's scary.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Clean laundry.

3. The shooting wasn't worse, or anywhere near here.

4. I wasn't there for the eclipse.

5. Friends.

6. My turtle.

Got woken up by a call from [personal profile] mashfanficchick asking did I want to come to breakfast with her and her mother and Theo. Why yes, yes I did. So I jumped up and got dressed and met them, and we went to Denny's. Had a tasty breakfast, though the service wasn't great.

Then we drove to New Jersey to return Theo, and stayed to visit awhile, which was nice, I got to hold Winnie.

Then we went to Blaze Pizza because by that time it was time to eat again, and had pizza. And while we were leaving the FWiB called, and I talked to him from there to the Lincoln Tunnel. HIs sister is in Texas and just lost her power to the hurricane.

When we got to Manhattan, [personal profile] mashfanficchick suggested going to Sprinkles for cupcakes. So we did and that was delicious.

And then they brought me back home. Back to work tomorrow, *sigh* But it was nice while it lasted.

Gratitude List:

1. Friends.

2. The FWiB.

3. Vacation was good while it lasted.

4. I have a job to go back to.

5. Still some quiet time before school starts.

6. Nice last day off.

Spent the day with Oldest Brother. He came over at 1:30. We called John and asked him if Betsy was OK in the face of Hurricane Harvey, (she is) and I told him what was going on with the cottage.

We dropped my laundry off, picked up my prescriptions, and then we went out to Queens Center Mall and walked around. We checked out a few stores, didn't buy anything. I got my free piece of Godiva chocolate. And we ate at the conveyor-belt sushi place. You sit at a counter and plates of sushi go past on a conveyor belt, color coded by the price of the sushi. You take what you want off the belt and stack the plates at your place. When you're done they add up the cost of the plates and give you your bill. Delicious. Because nothing says "final days of vacation" like raw fish on rice.

Anyway after we had sushi we got pretzels and headed back. The FWiB called and we talked while Oldest Brother drove me to the Stop and Shop near my apartment and I did some quick shopping.

Then we came back here and puttered on the computer, looking at things on youtube.

So all in all it was a very nice day.

Gratitude List:

1. Oldest Brother.

2. Sushi.

3. Family.

4. Still one more day of vacation.

5. The FWiB.

6. Lovely weather.

Though a bit busier since I started out with therapy. That went OK, and I came back, puttered online, and read. I'm rereading the Garth Nix "Old Kingdom" books (and two short stories). I started because i have them on my Nook and it was something to read up at the cottage, but I continued because I really like them.

Anyway, after I had done that (and taken a bit of a nap) I went to Boston Market and then my meeting. Meeting was good, small but good.

The FWiB didn't call today, but I knew he might not because he was out all day, and I think he took a long nap as soon as he got back. He emailed so I know all is well.

And that's all that's going on.

Except that the Trump creature pardoned that scumbag sheriff whatshisname. Grrrr.

Gratitude List:

1. My meetings and the people there.

2. The FWiB.

3. Vacation time.

4. My cats.

5. Good books.

6. My Nook.
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
Spent reading and puttering online. Slept later than I should have, didn't do much else. The FWiB called, and we talked, which was good. He may not be able to call tomorrow though.

Went over to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's for dinner, which was seared tuna steaks, and veggies. Rice pudding for dessert. Had a nice time, got a ride home.

There's talk about a new Starsky and Hutch reboot going to be made. UGH! PLEASE NO!

And that's about all there is too say.

Bed and some reading now.

Gratitude List:

1. Friends.

2. The FWiB.

3. Good books.

4. Yummy dinner.

5. Lovely weather for traveling.

6. Good fanfiction.

Nice day

Got up reasonably on time, puttered on the computer, and read until 3:30 when [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother picked me up and we went to Texas Road House for a late lunch/early dinner. There we were met by Oldest Brother, and the four of us had a good time. The FWiB called but we didn't talk long.

After that we went to the new Stew Leonard's in East Meadow. It's as nice as the other Stew Leonard's we've been to. I got a few things.

Then we went to Carvel out there, and had ice cream.

And that was the day.

Gratitude List:

1. Friends.

2. Oldest Brother.

3. The FWiB.

4. Lovely weather today, cooled down and dehumidified by last night's thunder storm.

5. Stew Leonard's.

6. Carvel.
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
Did practically nothing today. Slept late, puttered on the computer, didn't do much else. Read for awhile, ate.

The FWiB called, and we talked. And then I went out to my meeting. First wanted to go to the good pizza place across from Macy's, for dinner. But the traffic was unbelievable due to street work on Main Stret. It took forever to get there. I ate my pizza, which was yummy, and then headed for my meeting. Again, it took forever to get there, I was a half an hour late! And not only due to the street work on main, they rerouted part of the trip, which took up time also. Very frustrating.

But the meeting was good, and then I got a ride home so all is well.

Gratitude List:

1. My meetings and the people there.

2. The FWiB.

3. Good pizza.

4. Air conditioning.

5. Vacation days.

6. Good books.

Eclipse!

Aug. 22nd, 2017 12:00 am
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
Well first the scary certified letter turned ut to be nothing more than a copy of the notice I had near my door when I got home from vacation, saying that there's going to be an inspection by whoever is in charge of rent stablized apartments. So that was OK.

Anyway, after going to the post office I came back here and texted [personal profile] mashfanficchick that i had eclipse glasses and did she want to meet up to view the eclipse? And she did so we met up, and got something for lunch and settled in a park on Queens Blvd where we could see the sun. And we watched the eclipse, which was fascinating! Various other people came by trying to view it and we shared the glasses with them, which worked out very well.

So after the eclipse reached it's peak and was dwindling we went to her place and I helped her out wth a few things for which she offered to get me dinner.

The FWiB called and we talked. He watched the eclipse from the nursing home, someone had eclipse glasses and shared.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick's mother came back from New Jersey where she had been eclipse watching with Dani and family, and we went to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner.

And that was my day, and a very successful one.

Gratitude List:

1. Friends.

2. The FWiB.

3. Eclipse glasses.

4. Certified letter wasn't disastrous.

5. Cheesecake.

6. Bed soon.

So here's how my vacation went: Pretty good. Got picked up Sunday morning by [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother and went to the bus stop (Megabus, so not in the Port Authority like most buses.) The trip was uneventful, and I got there ahead of time. The Kid and SIL picked me up and we went to the famous Anchor bar, home of Buffalo wings. And we had wings which were indeed very good. And we went to the cottage, stopping to shop at Tops on the way.

Monday the contractor came to look things over, and things are not as bad as we had thought. He said the kitchen floor is fine, nothing wrong with it at all. But the porch roof is a big thing that needs fixing. And will be expensive. But we knew that really. We played Yatzee in the evening.

Tuesday we did wineries. Three of them, and we tried a fourth but they didn't open until later. Then went back to the cottage, the kids dropped me off and went out, and I waited with Aunt Helen and Mari S for cousins Diane and Bob to show up, and then had a nice talk with them and cousin Cliff who came by. Then we went out to eat at Gordie Harper's, a local place. The kids joined us there and had dessert with us.

Wednesday was Canada, Niagra-on-the-Lake, the Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory, and the falls. The butterflys were spectacular as always, and we had a very good time there. By the time we got to the falls, it was late. The kids planned on going to Toronto and leave me to get home on my own (which I wasn't thrilled about, but what can you do?) so rather than spend $22 on a parking lot space they found metered street parking, still expensive at $5 for half an hour. They walked with me part of the way to Table Rock and the brink of the falls, then had to leave to get back to the car. I continued on, ate there, and then walked back slowly to the pedestrian crossing on the Rainbow Bridge. Crossed to the American side, sat outside the Hard Rock Cafe and failed to get an Uber. So I had to take a cab, which was very expensive, never mind how much. Got home safely though.

Thursday since the kids weren't there I spent watching hummingbirds and reading. I brought my Nook along and read stuff I had on that. The kids got back quite late.

Friday we all sat around and did nothing. Aunt Helen came by and we invited her to dinner, The Kid grilled. She had to leave before we really sat down to eat but she got something. Then cousin Sue came by and hung out for awhile and talked. And there was more Yatzee that night.

Saturday was getting ready to go day, but first The kid made pancakes. They took me into Newfane to do the cottage laundry. They caulked the living room roof flashing like the contractor told them t do, with silicone caulking, and started packing up. We finally were ready to leave by 4:30 I think. They drove me to Rochester and I got a bus from there. [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother picked me up at the Port Authority, and we went out to a diner, and then brought me back here.

And that was my trip.

Today I slept quite late, then didn't really do anything but unpack, and get something to eat at Dunkin' Donuts The FWiB called, which was lovely. What wasn't o lovely was what I found in my mailbox, a notice of the certified letter waiting at the post office for me. I am very worried about that as good news rarely if ever comes by certified mail. But I can't think what it could be. I will have to pick it up tomorrow.

And now I'm caught up to date with everything.

Gratitude List:

1. The cats and turtle weree OK while i was gone.

2. The FWiB.

3. The Kid and SIL.

4. Family.

5. The cottage wasn't in such bad shape as we feared.

6. Still a week off from work.

I am home!

Did you miss me? Anyway, I got in at 4:30 am and went right to bed. Will write a catch-up post tonight at the usual time.
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
We were short staffed, so it was busy, but not too bad. The worst thing was that the air conditioning was, for the first time in quite awhile, far too strong and it was freezing. I had a bad moment when i bcame convinced that I had gotten my bus ticket for the wrong day, but I checked and I didn't.

But I got through it, and got home. The FWiB called, and we talked. We e-mailed too, yay! I will miss talking to him on vacation but the phone reception up there is so bad that the best we can manage will be occasional e-mails.

Did a little more packing, I am now confident that I have everything that doesn't need to be packed just before leaving. Tomorrow I put those last things in, and set up the cats, and then [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother are going to pick me up and take me to the bus stop. I love them!

I feel I should say something about Charlottesville. I don't want to. I feel sick and scared about it. I blame that thing that was elected president. I don't want to say anything more.

So anyway, this is goodbye for a week, unless I take my laptop to town and hook up to the wifi in the Village Shops, which I have done in the past on occasion. Be good everyone, and if you can't be good, be careful. ;-)

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother.

3. Vacation!

4. The Kid.

5. Got my bus ticket right!

6. Oldest Brother will come in and check on the cats.

Started off with therapy this morning, which was good. Then took the bus into Whitestone to the vet's to get Bjorn's special food, so there would be enough to put out for while I'm on vacation.

Came home, still nothing on the door about another plumber visit, so I don't know what's going to happen with that. Spent most of the day puttering around, found the charger for my camera, so I can take that on vacation.

Got e-mail back from Lynn S, we may be able to get together Friday while we're there, which would be nice.

Got an invitation to dinner from [personal profile] mashfanficchick but I was already on my way to my meeting, which I wanted to go to anyway since I won't be going to any next week, so I said no, which I think is the first time I've ever turned down one of her invitations. Ate dinner at Boston market as usual, the FWiB called an we talked before the meeting.

The meeting was good, and then I came home and that's about all.

Oh, I charged my Nook, and will probably bring that with me too.

Oh and the Vorkosigian books by Lois McMaster Bujold won the Hugo award for best series. Yay!

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. Therapy.

4. My Nook.

5. The rain that started while I was waiting for the bus home had stopped by the time I got home.

6. Friends.
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
The plumbers never showed up today! I waited until 2:00 and then gave up and went to work. I left a note on the door with my phone number but they never called, and when I got home tonight the note was untouched. So I assume they never came at all.

What was left of work went OK, and after I left at 7 the FWiB called. Had a nice talk. I called The Kid but just got her voicemail. Wanted to talk to her before she left for the cottage which will be either tomorrow or Saturday. Oh well. E-mailed Lynn S to see if he is interested in dropping by for a visit next week.

Finally got off my duff and found my passport, not that it was missing, I knew where it was, I just needed to dig it out. So now we can go to Canada while we're there. And did the advance packing of my suitcase, everything that I wont need before I leave. Except my shoes, I forgot to put them in so I have to do that. Bjorn kept trying to pack himself in the suitcase.

The one thing I did do this morning while I was fruitlessly waiting for the plumbers was read Penric's Fox. As always with Bujold, a very good read. I miss new Vorkosigian books, but I love her Five Gods stories too.

And that's about all there is to say.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Found passport.

3. Understanding boss.

4. The plumbers didn't come whole I wasn't here.

5. Lovely weather.

6. Wonderful reading.

A nice day

Work was OK, nothing much going on.

After work, the FWiB called, he had chemo today but is feeling OK. I also got a facebook message from my old friend Karen B from college, she's bought a retirement home (!) only an hour away from the cottage, and we are looking forward to seeing each other once she retires in a few years.

Went out with [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother to dinner at Fridays, then we went to Carvel. Very nice time.

And that's about all there is to the day.

Tomorrow I have the plumbers coming again to look at the gas valve.

Last night before bed I downloaded the new Lois McMaster Bujold novella, Pentic's Fox, and started reading it. I'll read a bit more tonight.

Gratitude List:

1. Friends, old and newer.

2. The FWiB.

3. Lovely weather.

4. My cats.

5. Good books.

6. Bed soon.
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
First, we got our new Children's person. She's young and seems nice, and lives in College Point, of all places! (Where I lived for years until the marriage broke up and I had to move). We had a small celebration to welcome her, some yummy stuff. I brought orange juice.

The other thing is I had my end of summer celebration today. Oh stop that, I know it's not the end of summer yet! But that's when we do it. So I had a graffiti art program, and gave out goody bags, and all was well though to be honest it was mostly younger kids not teens.

I got a text from [profile] mashfanfichick asking did I want to meet them for coffee at Starbucks after work before my meeting, and I said yes. So when i got out of work, the FWiB called and we talked while i waited for the bus and got to 20th ave. They met me there and we went to Starbucks, and had a good time, and then they took me to my meeting.

The meeting was small but good, and then I came home, and that's about all.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Friends.

3. My meetings and the people there.

4. My celebration is over and went well.

5. New person seems nice.

6. Vacation almost here.
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
Grey and rainy. Work was OK, nothing special. I used my lunch to buy my ticket for my trip up to the cottage on Sunday.

Our new children's person starts tomorrow, I'm looking forward to meeting her. Also tomorrow is my summer reading celebration, which will be very small, if I have anyone at all.

Was going to go to Uno for dinner with [personal profile] mashfanficchick and her mother for $5 pizza tonight but her mother decided she was to tired to drive safely so we didn't. Bummer, but probably for the best. Talked to the FWiB, picked up my laundry, and ate leftovers from Buffalo Wild Wings last week.

And that was the day basically.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Clean laundry.

3. Blue cheese dressing.

4. Less than a week left til vacation.

5. Umbrellas.

6. Vacant position in staff filled.

Quiet day

Aug. 6th, 2017 11:44 pm
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
Slept late and then puttered on the computer. Texted [personal profile] mashfanficchick and asked if she was up to anything, we decided to have dinner later.

So for the afternoon I didn't do much, went out for a little snack from Dunkin' Donuts to hold me til dinner, took my laundry down, did a very little work aruound the house.

When I went to meet up with [personal profile] mashfanficchick, the FWiB called so I talked to him on the way. I forgot that there is track work on the E and F trains so that they are only running to 71st street, and there's a shuttle bus from there. So I got on the shuttle bus... and got off at the wrong stop, so I had a long walk to her apartment. We ended up going out for sushi, cause nothing says "night out with a friend" like raw fish on rice.

Then we had desert, which was rolled ice cream, which I believe is originally a Thai treat. They have a refrigerated surface, and the liquid ice cream mix for one serving is poured on it with whatever add-in you pick, and it is mashed and mixed around until it freezes and is spread out flat and scraped up into rolls which are packed neatly in a cup and topped with more delicious things. It's very dense and tasty.

Then I came home and that's all.

Gratitude List:

1. [personal profile] mashfanficchick

2. The FWiB.

3. Sushi.

4. Clean laundry coming.

5. Lovely weather.

6. Got some exercise walking.

Movie day

Aug. 5th, 2017 10:04 pm
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
Oldest Brother picked Middle Brother up from his group home and then came and got me, and then we went and saw Spiderman: Homecoming. It was cute, that's the best word I can think of for it, quite enjoyable, and cute. Not a great movie, but we enjoyed it.

After the movie we made a brief stop at Petco, where I picked up stuff for the turtle, and some kitty litter, and then went to Five Guys to eat as usual. Then, since it seemed a little too early to be ending things we came back to my place and I played Irish music on youtube for Middle Brother, who loves Irish music.

The FWiB called, and I had him call back after they left, and we talked.

And that was my day pretty much. Paid some bills on-line, that's about all.

Gratitude List:

1. My brothers.

2. Cute movie.

3. The FWiB.

4. Youtube.

5. Five Guys cheeseburgers.

6. New light for my turtle tank.
silver_chipmunk: (Default)
And they got what they needed to do, whatever that was, done by a little after 10:30, so I got to work by a little after 11:30, so not too bad.

The rest of the work day was OK. There was a terrible rain storm in the morning before I left, so i brought my umbrella along but by the time I left, it was bright and sunny!

After work I went to Boston Market for dinner as usual. The FWiB called. He has gotten himself back on line with a new e-mail address, so we can e-mail again!

Then went to my meeting, which was good, another step 8 meeting.

The bus home left at the usual time, unlike last week when it was 10 minutes early and I almost missed it.

Betsy e-mailed snidely about the cottage and leaks. The Kid replied to her, I didn't. My stress levels are up again.

Made plans with Oldest Brother to take Middle Brother out tomorrow. We were going to see Valarian but it's not playing anymore so we're going to try for Spiderman instead.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB has e-mail again.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. The Kid.

4. Didn't get involved in the rain.

5. The plumbers were fast.

6. My boss was understanding.
