Had a staff meeting today with someone who spoke about the Common Core. Left me pretty much as confused as I was before. Also had a program for the teens which was not much of a success. Oh well.

After work bought cat food and bubble tea. The Kid and the SIL came over to borrow the folding chairs for tomorrow.

And that's about it.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Kid and SIL.

3. Program went OK if not great.

4. Remembered the cat food.

5. Plans for tomorrow.

6. Lovely weather.

I've been teaching for 28 years. Still have no idea what the f*#k Common Core is. I hope it's a buzz word that dies a quick death. Because it's really, really stupid.

In the UK it used to be literacy and numeracy for elementary kids. Now it seems to be 'computer skills' so that they can misuse online dictionaries and copy paste Wikipedia for assignments.

It means more than that here but I'm still confused as to just what it does mean. Oh well.

L'shana tova to you too.

I'm as liberal as they get, but education is run by politicians, and text book companies. I wish national standards were developed by specialists in child development.

I understand what is wanted…a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of subject matter…using multiple strategies, etc. But that's not what the textbooks are featuring. There are fast paced lessons with no skill mastering, and it is VERY confusing with multi-step directions that are difficult for the young learner to follow. I get lost half the time.

It all feels so wrong.
