Work was work. Afterward I went shopping, got a new metrocard, milk, orange juice, ice cream and cat food... the essentials of life. Came home and my new Ellery Queen magazine was here.

Tomorrow is our first staff meeting with the new boss. Hope it goes well. I have to be on time, so I don't want to stay up even a little late tonight.

Called the FWiB, no answer.

Gratitude List:

1. Ice cream.

2. Feeding my pets.

3. It's not raining.

4. Got my rent check mailed this morning.

5. My Ellery Queen magazine.

6. Bed soon.

Not too personal to answer, anyone who's been reading my journal for about five years knows the whole story. Just a long, very sad, story. FWiB stands for "Friend With Benefits". He's a dear friend of very long standing who I became part-time lovers with after my husband left me. He's married but had the knowledge and consent of his wife (because she had notified him she was quitting sex some years before), which is why only part time. We went on quite happily for several years but he had to retire, not entirely of his own desire, and move several states away for financial reasons. The trouble is, unbeknownst to me until after his retirement, he was a functional alcoholic. He was getting drunk every night, but still managed to work and function. After he lost his job, things got worse. He tried to do a rehab but it didn't work, he kept drinking, and after he moved it got much worse. He's been in the hospital multiple times as a result of his drinking, and has liver damage and a worsening mental state. For awhile he called me every day, then as his condition worsened I started calling him. Then he started not answering the phone most of the time. (His wife never answers the phone, don't know why). About a week and a half ago he drunk-called me at midnight, rambling and inchoherant, and the next day he actually did answer the phone when I called, but was just as bad. Since then, nothing. That's the condensed version, I think it covers all the major points.

Yeah, it sucks big time. I doubt there's any good resolution possible in this world. *sigh*
