Had an uncomfortable situation at work today. A patron complained that another patron was looking at porn on the computer. I walked over to have a look at the situation, and the person minimized his screen so quickly I couldn't see what he was looking at. But it was one of our regulars! Mr M! I have trouble believing that he was looking at porn in public. But the way he hid the screen when I came up... The woman who reported him stationed herself where she could rather obviously watch what he was dong, and he left soon after. I wrote an e-mail to the boss, and HE can deal with the situation tomorrow.

Aside from that the day went smoothly. After work I called the FWiB and we talked through Flushing. Then I went to my meeting, which was excellent... all four of the regulars plus a newcomer. So that was very good.

Have Oldest Brother coming tomorrow to wait for the exterminator.

Gratitude List:

1. I don't have to deal with the porn situation.

2. The FWiB.

3. My meetings and the people there.

4. Air conditioning.

5. Oldest Brother.

6. Exterminator supposedly coming tomorrow.

Well ...

Lots of people do look at pr0n. However, there are also many other things that can be mistaken for pr0n but aren't -- including medical information as well as art -- some those very sensitive topics that folks would likely not want someone else to see. Especially, people wanting to look up sensitive medical stuff are likely to use something other than their home service. That makes it extra complicated for libraries and other hosts, since those are things you probably don't want to discourage for public health and education reasons.

An oblique way of dealing with it: make an announcement or post a flyer reiterating the facility's policy on viewing. It sounds like viewing pr0n is not okay there, but if lookalikes are, mention things like fine art nudes and health references. That addresses the lady's concern without accusing anyone, and makes the distinction clear.
