Got up early this morning and went to the rally at City Hall against the proposed $36.2 million cuts to the NYC libraries. I got a tee-shirt, though it was one of the orange ones I already have several of, and had a good time all-in-all. I got there early so I went to a Starbucks to kill time.

After the rally I tried to get into City Hall to the hearing testimony but I was too late, the chamber was already filled to capacity and there was no room for us latecomers. So I just went back to the branch.

The day at work was good, we had a part time staffer to fill in who was quite good looking, so that was scenic. I did the Teen Journaling program which was successful in numbers, about 15, but not so much in behavior. There were kids outside the branch who were playing with splat guns, which riled all the kids up and it was difficult.

After work I went to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's place to watch 911. I stopped at Starbucks first to pick up stuff, and then we ordered sushi for dinner which was very tasty, The episode was good, too. After the show I called Oldest Brother for the third time, and then the Kid. We had a long conversation with the kid on speaker. A lot of fun.

We had ice cream and fruit for dessert, and then they briught me home and I Skyped the FWiB just to say good night.

And now it's time for bed.

Gratitude list:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Kid.

3. The City Council members supporting the library.

4. Good TV.

5. Starbucks.

6. Good numbers for my program.

Cuts to libraries hit me hard in the heart. Back when I was a student and life was for various (though mostly not devastating) reasons very lonely, one of the things that kept me going was being able to go and sit in the library and read, meeting friends through the pages that at the time I didn't have in real life. I don't know whether it's the case over there, but here libraries are often seen as easy targets. Councils have to provide a library service by law, but there's not much in the way of minimum standards.

The overwhelming desire for the GOP to keep anything but what they want taught to kids is so very scary and infuriating. Libraries are a necessary part of life, another thing they hate.
