I was treated to breakfast by someone today at the Colliers. This is a pub-restaurant a few miles west of Bewdley, near the small village of Clows (rhymes with "cows") Top. Their breakfast baps are truly excellent -- I went for sausage, bacon and tomato today. Then it was off to the next-door shop you see here. It sells some ordinary things, which are frankly expensive, but of more interest to me are the local pies and pasties, Bennetts ice cream (my favourite farmhouse brand) and cider. All of these were acquired today, so I think it counts as a successful mission! The shop also sells a few locally made ornaments and such -- you can just see some of the wooden animals (reindeer and rabbits) inside the outer door.

Birdfeeding

Jun. 8th, 2025 02:48 pm

Today is mostly sunny, humid, and warm. It rained yesterday and last night.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I dropped the Java moss into the trough pond. It floated. If it doesn't sink after absorbing water, I may need to find a rock to put on it.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/8/25 -- I did a bit of weeding in the septic garden and new picnic table.

Do any of you lovely folks track your basal body temps?
Any thermometer recommendations? I know that they're used a lot for natural family planning, but I'm just trying to watch my metabolism and it feels like there's a lot of baby juju that I don't want. What do men use? Maybe I should try that.

Bored? How can you possibly be bored? School's only been out three weeks!

Well, why don't you read a book?

(By Charm City Cakes)

You said you wanted to finish the Harry Potter series this summer. You can borrow my copies.

(Spoiler alert: Voldemort did it.)

(I am SO funny.)

Weren't there some songs you wanted to download? You could do that.

(By Queen City Bake Shop)

Oh, you already did?

Well, we could play Scrabble.

(Submitted by Ainsley B., and made by Cake Central user ToniRod)

No, I don't always win. Besides, everybody knows "syzygy" is a word.

Well, do you want to go on a bike ride?

(By ozcake)

They're both flat? Uh, when were you going to tell us?

OK. Fine. Ummm, do you want to help me make cookies?

(By Creative Cakes by Julie)

No, sorry, we're out of chocolate chips.

Oh, I know, why don't you call some friends and go swimming?

(By Short and Sweets)

You could all have a picnic in the backyard afterwards,

(By My Two Sweetie Pies)

...and then we could set up a tent and you can have a sleepover.

(By Hilary Rose Cupcakes)

I'm sure you didn't actually hear wolves howling last night. It was the neighbor's dog. And the backyard is fenced.

No? Well, what about a movie? Does a movie sound good?

(By Cakes by Roselyn)

No, it has to be rated PG. We talked about this...

Look, I've given you a lot of fun options, and you've said no to all of them. I guess I can always find you some chores to do! I need help transplanting those seedlings.

(Submitted by Danette T., "sprout" toppers made by mimicafe Union)

And when's the last time you cleaned your room?

(By Mary Lazarides)

Well, at least make the bed. And see if you can find the dog's leash. And, Sweetie, Christmas was six months ago. Maybe it's time to put away the reinbear?

Sweetie? Where are y...?

Are you playing Minecraft again?

(By Sweet Disposition Cakes)

(That's 1,025 individually placed squares. WOW.)

Ok, but just thirty minutes. Then, your room!

Happy Sunday!

New family member

Jun. 8th, 2025 07:26 am

Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, The Rev wanted to go look for a new cat. In this case, not specifically for her but as a companion for Jinx. Though we never got to fully integrate Jinx with Tilly prior to Tilly's rapid decline, Jinx has been looking about the house. We assume it's due to Tilly's "departure" as Jinx came from a multi cat house.

The Rev spent a few weeks researching nearby shelter websites before we went out with specific cats in mind at two different shelters that had remained on those sites through that entire time. Well, apparently, everyone and their first through third cousins had the same idea, but did it the day before. The first shelter we went to, the one we got Tilly from pre-covid, all the cats on the Rev's list had been adopted the day before. None of those left (and they're full not taking any more in except on an emergency basis) clicked.

Alright, next shelter, ditto. So we went home to regroup. We both poked around online. The third shelter in our county was down to six male cats if their website was to be believed. So, we didn't bother going there. Then I look at the shelter in the next county to the northwest, a good 45 minute drive away and passed that website to the Rev for review. Shelter was as full as the first one we looked at. So full, they were running a $25 special--any adult cat when usually, the fee was based on age of the cat with $25 usually the elderly cat fee. After a bunch of hemming and hawing, we decided to go take a look.

Cats ready for adoption are split into two rooms: Kittens and adults. Mostly out in the open unless they don't get along with other cats. Lots of cat walkways and a doorway out onto a "catio". We explained what we were looking for and met several that might fit the bill. We settled for Bee:
black, grey and dark beige tiger striped house cat sitting on a cushion.

This was Bee's second time at this shelter, sadly. After she was initially adopted, she slipped out of the house and vanished. After more than a month, the family that had adopted her gave up and adopted another cat. A year after she vanished, Bee returned, but the family surrendered her back to the shelter. The shelter didn't have more details. So we don't know if it was a case where she didn't get along with the "newcomer" or maybe family were in a rental with a 1 pet limit.

Anyway, we were prepared to do the normal "three-three-three" integration: three days for cat who is initially brought home, isolated in one room and immediately hides from everyone/everything before finally showing themselves briefly. Three weeks until introduction to other pet(s), and three months for full integration.

Well, Bee was out of hiding, though still nervous after 24 hours. We put a grate on the doorway just to see what would happen. She and Jinx would sniff at each other with no growling. Seven days we removed the grate. There's been some paw batting by Jinx, but otherwise no issues. Now, two weeks later and you'd think the two of them had been here for years. Except Bee still isn't comfortable with the whole house yet. We've discovered this the hard way the first time she went exploring at night and got 'lost' in the kitchen and yelled out the "song of her peoples" until the Rev came down to rescue her. So, we're leaving a light on overnight in the kitchen for now.
Today was supposed to be parade/chicken dinner day at mom’s. Unfortunately, we had a huge amount of rain that caused ditches and creeks to overflow their banks. The parade was canceled because of flooding but the chicken bbq was still on so my siblings and I gathered at mom’s for chicken dinners. My brother came, when he doesn’t normally come for the parade and other festivities, because he wanted to see my mom before her surgery. We sat on the screened-in porch and listened to it rain outside, which was surprisingly nice when we weren’t getting wet.

I managed to do three loads of laundry, the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and scooped kitty litter. I also watched the current ep of Resident Alien and an HGTV program, read some more Amelia Peabody, and still talked to mom on the phone. I also got extra sleep because I slept in until 8am for the first time in ages! (Going back to bed after getting the dogs back inside, of course.)

In bad personal news, we even had flooding at our home, which is unheard of because we’re not near any creeks. What happened, in two instances, was a matter of blocked drainage. The drain outside the basement got plugged, so our basement flooded for the first time ever. (Back when Hurricane Irene gave us about 13" of rain, a tiny bit of water entered the basement through a crack in the floor, but nothing before or since, until now.)

The other was the pond. Pip puts a mesh wire over the spill pipe in the spring so the baby geese don’t get sucked down it, and that mesh got blocked, so the pond built up until it spilled over the banks. A lot of fish were caught in the spill, unfortunately. And that’s in addition to the normal build-up of water we get in a line across the property (where the slight down hill from the house meets the down hill from the hill where the pine trees are). There was so much water.

Pip has been squeegeeing the basement, but a squeegee can only do so much. He’s going to have to jack hammer an actual hole into the basement floor for a sub pump and squeegee the water into it. What a pain in the ass. (Thankfully Pip had a change of plans! He’s going to try to vacuum the water out with a shop vac ~before he goes to the effort of jack hammering a hole in the floor!) He also had to go in the pond several times to unclog the mesh so the water could flow out the way it was supposed to. (In addition to the rain, the pond fills with run-off from the hill above it, and there was a LOT of run-off.)

Temps started out at 63.0(F) and reached 76.4. Thankfully the rain ended mid-afternoon and the sun came out.

JFC what is it about Greeks?

Jun. 8th, 2025 08:49 am

A shocking number of people will blithely tell us all about the book they read, in English, on an English-language subreddit, and never tell us that they didn't read it in English. I can only catch so many of them - if they don't say "English isn't my first language" or make any obvious foreign language errors then I'll never know. (Some of them say "I read this in my own language" and then don't tell us what that language was.)

Most of these people, if prompted, will tell you what language they read it in. Three times now, I've had to ask twice because they refused to answer the question in a useful way, and every time that person has been Greek.

I thought it was a little funny the second time, but three times is the start of a worrying pattern, especially as it's not at all the most popular not-English language posted there. Maybe there's something going badly wrong with their school system?

(And, sidenote, even if you're certain it was translated from English you still ought to tell us the language it was written in. At least in theory this can help us weed out false positives, although I may be expecting too much of fellow commenters to that subreddit.)

I was once again in Worcester to see friends today, but after I'd left that meetup I had a short time to do some shopping before my bus home. I took the opportunity for a photo, as you can see! This is Worcester Cathedral, taken from the first floor balcony in the Cathedral Square centre (a few restaurants and coffee shops, plus a hotel). I had several goes at getting a snap with all of the flags visible, but this was the closest I got! You can easily see the Ukrainian flag on the left, then the Union Flag. The third pole currently has a Pride flag, but that one refused to co-operate. On the top of the Cathedral tower is the English flag (St George's Cross). As you can probably tell from the sky, the weather was a tad iffy today, though fortunately the heavy rain held off until I was on the bus back!
